Social Security Disability Claim Reconsideration

If an SSI or SSD claim is denied at the initial stage, you have the choice of filing a new SSI or SSD claim, or filing a request for reconsideration within 60 days of the initial denial. Asking for reconsideration is almost always the best option.

To request reconsideration, two forms are usually required: a Request for Reconsideration and a Reconsideration Disability Report. In addition, the Social Security Administration will usually ask for additional signed releases of information.

The reconsideration process will take a minimum of 60 days, and often longer.

If your disability benefits are denied…

You should contact a Social Security disability appeal attorney immediately about representation before filing a Request for Hearing. You need to make sure that you file a Request for Hearing within 60 days of the Notice of Reconsideration (reconsideration determination).
